Samos rides the eastern Aegean like a green crescent, its northern cliffs falling 1,400 metres into cobalt water. Posidonia meadows carpet the shallows, nurseries for grouper and octopus. Sunset sailings depart Pythagorio at 18:00, when the light turns the Mycale mountains across the strait into layered silhouettes. Most routes anchor off Kerveli Bay for swimming as the sun drops behind Mount Kerkis. Operators favour the eight-to-ten-metre caïques built in Karlovasi's boatyards—shallow-draft wooden hulls designed for the Aegean's summer meltemi winds. Larger catamarans, licensed for 40 passengers, handle the rougher western coast. All captains hold commercial maritime certification through the Hellenic Coast Guard, and vessels undergo annual safety inspections. The season runs April through October, though July and August bring afternoon winds that can cancel western routes. Morning departures between 08:30 and 09:30 catch the calmest seas, when the meltemi has not yet built and visibility reaches 30 metres underwater.
